Pristine2's post reminded me that I was missing and was looking for the 1844 LSD as it is the first low mintage coin in the series. The 1844 LSD had a tiny mintage of 20,000, but is not as scarce as the mintage indicates. All 1844 LSDs were struck with one die pair that has a doubled die obverse, the OC-1, which is the only LSD that has 4 vertical lines in the vertical stripes in the obverse shield as a result of the doubling. No other coin in the LSD series shares this feature. Multiple varieties exist because it is believed that this single die pair was clashed at some point in the emission sequence, and different clashed features appeared and then faded as the obverse die pair wore down. After seeing Pristine2's post I looked around to see if any nice ones were available. I found this one and I acquired it. Thoughts? Thanks!    Here you can clearly see the fourth vertical line in the vertical stripe on the obverse shield. Also we see doubling in the lettering on ribbon. The DDO effect is very strong. Very little exposure to these, so I'll just throw out a number and see if it sticks. 63..........lovely coin no matter what the grade is.

definitely mishandled with that large print across the obv. based only on these photos it looked like someone had attempted to remove it by a dip in the pool. I hope its just the photos making the surfaces look dull.

i think those hairlines could be die polish lines. the surfaces on the in-hand photos are way better. AU58 is the correct grade on her. another example of how lighting and angles can alter what you see.
