I search a lot of coin rolls that I get from banks. I was wondering if anyone out there searches packs of banknotes from banks and if so, have you made any nice finds ?

I recently got a call from one or my bank branches to say that had just gotten a large deposit of $2 bills. My wife is a currency collector and needs a $2 and $5 star note to finish her set. So I went down and picked them up. She found 15 nice and crisp consecutive serial numbered bills, 3 red seal notes 2 of which were in nice condition and 4 star notes 3 of which were in pretty good shape.

Must be nice to have a connection at a bank to notify you about good stuff. Good for you & those sound like nice notes.

Searching a few hundred notes goes pretty quick and is a little expensive on the initial outlay. Searching a few hundred coins might take a while. I guess that's why I haven't tried note searching. I might for s change of pace.

Every once in a while I will go through one thousand one dollar bills and I have found a few star notes and a few special serial numbers. I have never found any silver certificates or red seals though. I also have found a few web notes. I was able to get about a hundred two dollar bills from a credit union and there was a run of 30 consecutive serial numbers all crisp, I think they were 2003. John1

I search $1s and $2s. I've tried searching $5s, but that gets expensive and I'd rather have five times as many ones. I look for special serial numbers, star notes, and web notes. I'm working on a set of $2 star notes from all twelve districts from 1976. The $1 has too many series for me to keep up with. Of course I'd notice the red or blue seal notes, but don't expect to find any.

Sounds like it's the same numbers game as with coins. The more you search the better odds of finding something nice. A little luck (or a lot) doesn't hurt either. Thanx to all for the input.

I regularly pick up straps of $1 and $2 bills from the bank as that I'm actively involved in https://www.wheresgeorge.com and that's how I acquire bills to enter, mark, and spend. Another reason for going thru $2 straps is that once in a great while I will encounter a $2 red seal. I'm also trying to complete a Federal Reserve Bank set of the 2003A $2 bills. I have, only once, found a silver certificate in a $1 strap. That was about two years ago. One thing I specifically look for in $1 and $2 straps is "ugly money" (see https://www.uglymoney.com ) that is, bills where someone doctored the portrait or wrote/stamped something on it. $2 bills tend to be graffiti magnets and I think my weirdest deuce was where someone was writing out a "best wishes on your upcoming transplant" greeting to someone. I think one reason for my fascination with defaced currency is that when I was in high school and college, I really enjoyed defacing currency myself. On some bills I would keep writing things on them until there was no more room to write. On others I would simply add dark sunglasses and/or a beard to the portrait.

Yep, usually get a few hundred each week. Primarily looking for stars and special numbers. I'm relatively new (5months) but surprised to ocassionally see crisp bills from the 60's. Yet to find a web note, but have found one true radar. Have searched abt 7800 to date.

I give up. What is a web note? (It's not in the glossary section of this site)

Web notes were an experiment to reduce costs in printing $1 bills. As of now $1 bills are printed in 32 note sheets and have to be hand fed. What the web notes were were a roll of paper automagically fed into a printing machine and ran continuously like newspapers. Thus, more notes were produced cheaper and faster. However, there was a problem with the machines (and I think the paper quality, too!) so the experiment was scrapped. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_notes

I just went to the bank asking for halves and the nice teller said "Do you collect $2 bills? I have one that looks old" I said "sure" and it turned out to be a Red Seal 1953C.

Cool! My experience is that tellers won't turn loose of the loose red seals. I once had one show me a series 1928 $2 bill, and she wouldn't sell it to me.

That's not right Dave. Aren't tellers supposed to give customers whatever they have in their drawer that is requested. Showing you something and saying you can't have is wrong !
