I really enjoy coins. It's the closest thing that I'd say having as a hobby. It started as a kid inheriting a handful of wheat cents, silvers and random foreign coins from my dad. Over the years, I grew it into a modest collection mostly by checking change (always!) and scanning the Coinstar machine. Years ago I even did a little coin roll hunting and on rare occasion I'll make a purchase from the Mint. The problem is that I don't stay consistent. I'm thinking that if I had a targeted collection mission (like going after everything with sail boats which I've seen here), it will keep me more active. Otherwise I'm just collecting aimlessly. Plus, I'm hoping a shared mission might even get my sons into the hobby as they have thus far been lukewarm on it. Any suggestions for starting on a new mission to reinvigorate and build? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Are you talking finding coins in change? Are you talking putting together sets by purchasing an album then purchasing coins to fill them with? Newer coins? Older coins? Silver coins? Clad coins? Well you get the idea - where would you like to head to in your collecting adventure?

Well if you want to go the Album route and begin the hunt to purchase coins to fill them (which is always a fun time) is a collection of Franklin halves or Ike dollars. They are readily available and the Ikes are mostly clad coins so the cost will be on the low side. If you like to roll search then cents and nickels will be easy to fill some albums. Finding old nickels in rolls is common still so going with them would be a fun task also. I don't know how the cent roll searching would be now a days since the cents have stopped being minted. That's just a few ideas for putting together a collection that won't cost much and is completely doable with the abundance of coins being available through purchase or hunting. I'm sure other people will chime in later in the day - this place is kinda "dead" at the wee hours of the morning!

May I assume that that you are not purchasing coins but rather collecting purely from circulation? If this is the case, the State Quarters and parks quarters are still readily found in common change.

Long long ago (think early '70s) one of my first projects was to complete a US 20th Century Type Set. Not gold - I was in my early teens.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

My suggestion would be to visit a local coin shop if there is one in your area. You will likely find a myriad of possibilities. Example, you and your sons can begin collecting coins from around the world from your and their birth years. Most coin shops have bins of foreign coins you can look through and select the ones that interest you (birth dates for example). These are quite inexpensive but are fun and educational. If you are more interested in US coins, I would start by purchasing a Red Book and exploring the history of American coinage, coin types, etc. Then deciding which coins you may want to collect. Some ideas to consider

One fun idea that I heard here was a birth year set from every world country existing at that time. Some people collect coins with animals, sea life, trees, coats of arms, or another visual theme. You can check out the Post Your (Theme) threads for great ideas on themes that people collect. Or you might pick a continent and time frame and assemble a set of all circulating coins.

I agree with Freespeech and Brandmeister on world birthyear collection. You could do it and your kids could do theirs.
Great way to learn world geography and history.
Maybe CCF members would send you some coins to get you started.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to share ideas. I really like the birth year concept since it has personal meaning. This is exactly what I hoped for by posting. Thanks!

Several years ago I got the doldrums from my "normal" collection (cents, nickels, quarters...ect) then someone on another site posted about their coin with Portuguese Explorer Vasco da Gama's portit on it and that set me down the road of collecting coins with explorers and/or their mode of transportation. Prior to that I was just into US coins, now I'm traveling around the world through these coins enjoying the artwork along with the history.
