My collecting budget ain't what it used to be so I've been looking at lower-priced items like common silver dollars. Sometimes the local dealer has attractive coins in the $14 box, such as this 1922 Peace dollar. It's no gem but it does have very attractive, light pastel toning on the reverse. There was tape residue on the obverse which was mostly removed with an acetone soak. It looks like some residue remains and I need to repeat the soak.

The photo only hints at the actual color of the reverse (I find toning very hard to image). The colors are brighter in-hand as the coin is tilted under the light. I believe this to be natural toning. Peace dollars are not often found with color but when you do find it, this is what it typically looks like.

That is a hammered Peace! $14 is a steal on any decent 90% silver dollar.

Holy cow, what a strike. It's not High Relief - the olive branch and spike differ on them - but it's about as strong a strike as one will ever see on a low-relief coin.

Interesting to note, there are High Relief 1922's. A few Proofs were struck (maybe a dozen) and it's said that 35,401 high relief coins were struck for circulation and then melted. A few have been noted to have survived.

Thanks for the comments!

Here's another Peace toner from the bargain bin, this time toned more brightly on the obverse. In contrast to the 1922 dollar this one is a bit soft on the reverse. I grade it AU-53 to AU-55 and so expect to see slight wear. The weak detail on the eagle's wing and leg appears to be as-struck rather than worn.
