i thought I had made a post about this coin somewhere on ccf, but probably years ago if I did, but I thought i'd post a few old pix of it again. I mentioned this coin in the recent 1878 VAM-12 post from the other day.

yes, there I am trying to get fingerprints all over it.

the die crack over the cap is one of the neat features of this one. the overpolished nostril and overpolished areas of the eagle are other features.

yes, i'll try to remember to get pix of the displaced fields around the crack. it's slight, but can be seen.

Very nice looking coin and especially for a VAM-138.

same here. in the past, on the rare occasions when i'd go to the coin shop in miami I always made it a point to search the Morgan dollar junk box and bring home several random picks & a cherry or two for studying & learning the coin & how to search for things & how to attribute these beautiful silver dollars. I've fished a few interesting VAMs from the junk box.

if I can attribute them i'll make an insert page for the album and tag it, like this one:

1878-Morgan-Dollar-7TF-VAM-138-Weak-Nostril,-Die-Break-Over-Cap

not fancy, just helpful.

and here's a little bit of a look at the subtle displaced fields:

1878-Morgan-Dollar-7TF-VAM-138-Weak-Nostril,-Die-Break-Over-Cap

the pic doesn't do it justice. when you have the coin in-hand and can angle it around a little bit you can easily see the displacement. this picture shows a very subtle difference. you can see the difference in the way the light & shadows play differently in the field above & below that die crack.
