Should I Reholder Or Have This 1808/7 Capped Bust Half Regraded?

Pmint1 Valued Member United States 465 Posts	Posted 02/07/2026 2:31 pm I Bought this half dollar a few years ago before I started collecting Capped Bust half dollars. I have recently gotten very interested in them and now collect the series. It is in a really scratched up NGC slab graded EF 45. The slab makes it hard to see the coin. It has copper and blue toning and plenty of luster. Would you just have it reholdered or should I have it regraded? Would one of the other services be preferable to NGC to send it to? Is this the kind of toning that helps with value as a lot of these seem pretty darkly toned? This is my first ever attempt to load images. Report this Post to the Staff

MisterT Pillar of the Community United States 2001 Posts	Posted 02/07/2026 3:14 pm One reason why I always use protective sleeves for all of my slabbed coins. One other option you may consider is to wet sand the lenses starting with 320 grit and working down to 1000 or 2000 grit and then spray it with a clear coat like a UV clear Krylon. Not that UV is necessary, it is just a method I use for restoring automotive headlight lenses and it works very well. Report this Post to the Staff

If you watch enough auctions you will see people paying well over what coins are worth with toning. But that is usually with rainbow toning. For what ever that's worth good luck.
