Are those 'marks' raised, sunken (incuse), or flush?

Hmmmm...
I don't believe they are caused Feeder Finger Damage to the dies, since Feeder Finger Damage during this time period are N-S on the reverse, towards the top.

These seem to be parallel and E-W on both faces and near the rim gutter on the die.
The die face would have been convex, so maybe, IMHO, the striking pressure was just light enough that the roller lines weren't eliminated during the strike.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
