I wish to present two 1917 "S on Obverse" Walking Liberty half dollars from my collection. The first might be an RPM (or Other error.... I am not an expert, but would like to become more informed with a little help from the community). The second half dollar shown bears a "normal" Obverse mintmark from the same year for comparison purposes.

I've read several articles recently regarding the historical significance (and numismatic possibilities) of the mint mark transitioning from Obverse to Reverse in 1917. One article alluded to the fact that the Director of the Mint spotted some sort of problem with the Obverse Mintmarks several weeks after they went into into circulation in 1917. This problem lead to the sudden switch in regards to the location of the Mintmark. I've read about RPMs for that year being a distinct possibility but I've never seen any posted images of one. The mintmark on the 1917 RPM is so tiny it becomes impossible to discern the difference between the two mintmarks using a low power magnifying glass.

I invite opinions about whether that is an error. I'm more concerned about the Error than the grade of the coin.

Thanks for your help.

To CCF!

Not seeing an RPM in these pictures. Looks more like circulation flattening and wear.

For a new member to present the question with detailed research is very refreshing!
Thank you Irx52!

As mentioned...the pic is a little blurry.
Even though VV doesn't list an RPM for 17-S obv...
You could be the discovery coin.
Give us a better in focus pic...cuz right now...kinda looks like a hit or circ flattened.

Thanks for the good feedback.

The comments about the fuzzy picture were correct. I am experimenting with the coin images and I think that one was a failed attempt.

Definitely not an RPM...
