Is this a case of someone thinking they have rare gold coins when they're literally just gold plated circulation coins? The letter provided by the bank even confirms he paid $8.00 for these so called 24k gold coins. What is going on? Are these gold or not? Report this Post to the Staff

That sure seems to be the case. A lot of elderly people buy those novelty coins from Parade magazine or other shady sources, thinking they are valuable. Or maybe not so much, at $8. But, ebay is not to blame for his misfortune. The TV station should probably be investigating the seller if they were misleading, not sliming ebay. On the other hand, if James seriously thought he was buying gold coins for $8, bad on him. Didn't his mama teach him there is no gift horse, or that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is? The phrase 'caveat emptor' dates back to the 16th century. Sap Moderator Australia 16849 Posts	Posted 04/15/2026 03:45 am He's never going to get much money for these coins, as they are indeed not "24K gold", but thinly gold-plated by a mass-marketeering company - the US Mint did not sell either solid gold or gold-plated examples of these coins. They weren't worth the $8 each he paid way back when, and aren't worth $8 each now. I seriously doubt the "buyer" was actually interested in paying $9600 for two "gold" coins he must have known were only gold-plated. ebay calling then "counterfeit" is a stretch, since technically they are indeed genuine coins, but if they were being sold as "24K gold", then ebay is perfectly justified in removing the listings as "significantly not as described" - especially if this guy is asking lots of money for them. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
