Finally got myself a 7070, and I'm excited about the possibilities. I know it's an expensive one, and there are lots of coins (older) that I am not as keen on as newer ones. But I'm gonna take my time and have fun with it. Now, the reason for the topic, how much would you pay for a 1957 Flying Eagle cent, in say VF condition? I'm looking at one at my local shop that I think is vf, maybe high f, but it looks pretty good, nothing major wrong with it. Anyway, he had it marked $55, but he said I could have it for $40. Y'all think this is a good deal? Thanks

I think the price may be a tiny bit high... but that is without seeing the coin. Numismedia lists it at $55 in VF and $42 in F. Numismedia also tends to be a bit on the high side of the pricing range.
If it had good eye appeal for the price, I would consider it... but it's really hard to say without seeing the coin.
To sum up, if you like the coin... I'd say it's close enough to a good deal that you should buy it.

I was under the impression that numismedia listed in fair market value. Is there another site that may be a better, more fair price reference?

malissa, I think that numismedia is a good source but I take it with a grain of salt, some coins are really close while others are a bit on the high side depending on series. I certainly think it is a better gague of market value that say Coin World's coin values or some of the other magazines or PCGs website. Texas Collector- The price may be a bit high but if you like the coin and feel comfortable about the grade and it appeals to you, why not buy it for the 7070, you can always upgrade later if you need to.

Gray sheet bid for 1857 eagle at F is $33, VF is $36, XF is $95.

So $40 isn't horrible, but work him to $35!

Here are a couple of pics. Trust me, it looks a little better in hand than in the pics, but maybe I should have waited for another one. Oh well, I like it and it looks good in my book, and like cownas22 said, I can always upgrade later. What do y'all think as far as grade? Fine?

I would grade this example VG-8. Neither the tips of the wings, nor the eye are still "sharp".

I agree with VG-8. It does appear to be a nice problem free coin, but no where near F-VF imo.

Well if a coin is at $36 bid then I think that $40 sale price is a fair deal. LOL that link for the flying eagle was mine. I just sold it a bit ago. Sry.

Thanks guys.
There's a coin show this Saturday, so hopefully I'll get something good for my 7070. The first (and only) show I went to, I didn't buy anything. Now I have a better idea of what I need though, so we'll see.
Thanks for the advice.
