2009 Na $1 Proof Missing Most Of The Edge Lettering

DNA Pillar of the Community United States 2734 Posts	Posted 07/02/2009 11:15 am I've bought several 2009 Full Clad Proof Sets at the Denver Mint for friends and co-workers. Yesterday, I made another 'Mint run' and bought a few more sets. One of the Sets I'm keeping. Why? The Native American Proof Dollar in this set says "E Pluribus Unum" on the edge. That's it! This is a very weak edge lettering strike. The "E Pluribus Unum" lettering is weak but visible to the naked eye, but the rest of the rim is bare to the naked eye. I could make out some traces of "2009" with a 16× loupe, but there's no trace of an "S" mark. I've bought ten of these sets, and I inspected each coin in each set before I delivered it to the friend/co-worker. All of the other 2009-S Proof Native American dollars had very strong edge lettering, deeper lettering than on the business strike coins. So this is not a coin that missed the edge letter striking process, but I have never seen an edge strike this weak on any 2007-up Dollar coin (not even on a business strike, much less a Proof!) biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 07/02/2009 11:30 am The edge lettering process is completely different for business strike and proof coins. The business strikes are force spun through a roller die to apply the edge lettering while the lettering is applied to the proofs at the time of striking by a segmented edge lettered collar. I do know that the proof edge lettering tends to be weaker but it should still all be present, unless perhaps the collar die was faulty. Report this Post to the Staff
DNA Pillar of the Community United States 2734 Posts	Posted 07/03/2009 9:30 pm Interesting, I've bought (from the Denver Mint) several hundred 2009-D Native American dollar business strike coins, and inspected the edge of each one. Their lettering is a bit weaker than on 2007-08 Presidential dollars, but each has been fully lettered. All the other 2009-S Proof N.A. Dollars in the Sets I bought had nice strong edge lettering, at least equal to that of the 2007-09 Proof Presidential dollars in my Proof Sets. Report this Post to the Staff
