I've found 3 Buffaloes in 400 rolls, so you still have some looking to do. Oddly enough, I found 1 V nickel in those 400 rolls.

Ive never had much success in finding Buffalo nickels in rolls, I've found one my entire roll-looking career.

I think it is a 1 on 30,000 chance. I don;t remember where I read that. Also, nickEL. I do get cheap nickels from people that spell it nickle on ebay.

The number of Buffaloes I have found searching through 9300 rolls is 35 (1 per 265.7 rolls) and 21 Liberties (1 per 442.9 rolls).

I found this 1938-D in a roll on May 24, 2009, so it's not impossible. I found a 1935 (P) VF full-horn Buffalo last year (which I gave to a friend for his father's birthday present, since his father was born in 1935!). That said, the average odds of finding even a dateless Buffalo nickel in a mixed circulated roll are approximately "1 roll in 500" or less. If the estimates that "1 in 25,000" Nickels in circulation is a Buffalo are correct, that would work out to be one Buffalo nickel per 625 rolls (a roll being 40 Nickels, 25,000 divided by 40 is 625) The odds for full-date Buffalos in F+ condition from a roll.... One factor in your favor, coincollectingkid, is that more jars and cans full of coins are being cashed in at banks and CoinStar machines due to the recession (the same factor that is hampering distribution of new 2009 coins!), and some of those collections of pocket change may have been sitting around for decades, which increases the odds of finding older coins in circulation. I have been finding significantly more numbers of older coins in change and in rolls since this time last year.

Might just be the same odds as getting a 2009 Nickel as a Buffalo too ! ......
