Roll Searchers beware! We've read posts lately about a teenager being hassled and being treated rudely at his dump banks. That is pretty bad...What happened to me is unbelievable (at least to me). Today I received a letter from my bank asking me to close my account or they would do it for me! I think this is a sad way of conducting business. 1) I opened this account about a month ago...with $130.00 in nickels and pennys (no complaint) 2) on the day this letter was written....there was over $1000.00 in this account. 3) There was over $500.00 in this account today when I complied with the banks request and closed the account. 4) Never once did they ever ask me or tell me that they would not accept any more coin deposits (which were always rolled)! 5)This was a checking account...not a savings account. Most people who use a checking account deposit money into the account and then withdraw money as needed! My account was growing continually.
I find this route they chose to take distasteful. I've used this bank before when I lived in another state and never had any problems with them. Has anybody here ever run into this sort of problem?

They must have done some sort of audit to see which customers cost them more then they make off of their accounts. It seems strange that they would catch it so fast though, maybe they have had other coin roll hunters causing them problems.
I hope this doesn't happen to me, I use 3 different banks as dumps just to spread them around. I even use Coinstar once in a while just to keep from wearing out my welcome at my dump banks.

What really gets me the most, is the fact that they knew when I opened the account at the branch...what I was doing. They knew I was a collector and was searching coin. They had no problem opening my account with rolls, and never said a word to me about my deposits. I even spread my roll deposits out between 2 different branches.

Did you ask them why? I would ask to speak to a manager and tell them you need to know why they are making you close the account. What they are doing just doesn't sound legal to me.

The letter was sent from the corporate office. This isn't a little rinky dink bank. It is a well known bank in the southeast.

This particular bank was SunTrust.

I would write a letter to their customer relations department (assuming they have one!) and politely ask why SunTrust would require a customer to close a legitimate checking account. I presume you were in compliance with all their regulations regarding minimum balance and service charges, so what's the problem? If they don't provide a satisfactory reply (such as an abject apology and an offer to reinstate your account immediately) I would follow up with a formal complaint to the Better Business Bureau, the FDIC, and/or any other authority who might have influence over banking business practices.
These people sound like they need a good slap upside the head!

Here is the letter. Click on it and it should be able to be read.

SunTrust may be a new oxymoron.
I've had a brokerage do this to me because I wasn't generating enough activity (commission fees) for them.

That is crazy! If I were you I'd spend a whole day and see how far you can get to the top of the food chain and complain and moan about how bad the service is. Once you get your way... Deposit $500 in cents and cancel the account

It really stinks right now because every company is pinching pennies at the sacrifice of their employees/customers. Hopefully, this will come back to bite them hard!
