Don't you have a banking ombudsman over there? If banks were to treat customers like that over here there would be a lot of trouble.

Bad PR to say the least! Obviously SunTrust is unaware of the internet. Anybody can now Google their name and see your complaint.

It sure seems like there is more here than meets the eye. Your activity might match a pattern that indicates some possible illegal activity like money laundering or a fencing operation to get rid of stolen goods. It is probably cheaper for them to terminate your account than go through any hassles of investigating. I think homeland security may have a hand in some of this ,especially if these banks took any TARP money. Does "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING" mean anything to you?

My activity isn't any different than any other roll searchers. And nobody else seems to have had that problem! I think the problem lies in the probability that the branches have a quota to meet when it comes to new customers. In a past job I frequented banks quite often. Everytime I walked into Suntrust thet tried to get me to open an account with them. When I didn't they asked me for my name and address as a prospect. At one time they were giving away $50.00 gift cards if you opened a new account. This branch I opened this account at knew that I was a collector and said they would order coin for me! After ordering one box of half dollars for me, the manager refused to let the head teller order any more. The one box of halves was a very good box and I was upset that they wouldnt order more. (I dumped the remaining half dollars at a different bank). It was at this point I decided to make this bank a dump bank. They lied to me just to get me to open an account with them!

Quote: wonder how much it actually costs them to have this stuff shipped in and shipped out Ya know...the morons at SunTrust can't even tell ya! They informed me that it costs them to ship the coins! I ask how much?...I'll pay it! (to get them to continue ordering halves for me) "I Don't Know" was the managers reply! When I asked the General manager the same question and told him I would pay it, his response was....."We don't have any way to charge the customer"! Can you imagine this? Coming from a Financial Institution? That a bank can't find a way to charge a customer a fee or penalty!

I will play the contrarian here from a strictly business point of view. I am not at roll searcher so I have no dog in this fight either way. If someone averages $750 in a checking account a bank may make $15/year if they can get 3% off their money. By the time you take out overhead for the building, staff, statements, etc. they are not making any money. Many branches are strategically located to optimize the amount of small business traffic as this business is much more profitable. If it we taking any measurable extra time for tellers or somehow selling boxes to retail customers was messing up my change inventory for samll business customers I would consider discouraging it as well.
That being said, I think the idea of banks that have an issue with roll hunters should offer to do the service at a nominal fee rather than cancelling an account. That way it is a choice. One irony as I read these is many suggest to punish a bank you 'dump' a large amount of change on them. What is the amount of change that should be routine business vs. a punishing 'dump' of change? My guess it the amount is much smaller from the bank's persepctive than from the average roll searcher.
Just my $.02. You can let me have it now.

Interesting, now I must wonder if a bank, any bank, would have the right to turn away a customer for changing rolls of coins for paper money. It's all legal tender and after all, that's what banks are there for. I'd continue using the back to dumb change while no longer using them for checking. My local bank is actually very collector friendly. ~ Jim

Call Fox News.. seriously. In DC, "Fox 5 Investigates" has caused quite a furor a few times when investigating stupid business practices and exposing them on the news.. you would be surprised how quickly bad publicity lights a fire under someone's behind to fix something. If you let them know Suntrust is actually asking customers with growing accounts to close them, they may be able to come up with more people it's happening to, and plaster Suntrust all over the news as the poster child for the worst place to try to keep your money.
I'm not saying this would be a way to get back at the bank, it's to expose them. This is just ridiculous. Your account was growing and like other accounts, would be able to feed and clothe and line the pockets of the bank managers soon enough. I know banks are in it for the money they make, but, to me, this points to shady business practices, and I certainly will steer clear of them the next time I need a loan or a new account of any kind.
These banks and businesses keep forgetting the old customer service rule: "One dissatisfied customer tells 10". In the internet age, add a few zero's.

I think homeland security may have a hand in some of this ,especially if these banks took any TARP money. Does "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING" mean anything to you? I had a very similar situation here in Kentucky. I was depositing all of my rolled coin at a large bank here in Central Kentucky, spreading my deposits out to a number of branches, and then withdrawing the funds to buy more coin. Suddenly one day I was informed my account was closed. When I inquired with the bank as to why, I was pretty much given a runaround. So, I let it go and went to open an account with another bank. I was informed by the other bank that I was on the national "blacklist" of either TeleCheck or ChexSystems, and they could not open an account for me! I checked with ChexSystems, and they told me that this large bank had closed my account due to BANK FRAUD! Just because I deposited rolls of coins, and immediately took the money out? Well, this was almost a year ago, and I still have an attorney fighting it, but as of now I am still on that blacklist. It's hard to do roll searching when you cannot open accounts at banks to dump at. I have an account at a great little bank that does not use ChexSystems or TeleCheck, and that is where I have my checking. But, since I was so well known at that large bank, I can still go into most of their branches to switch out my rolls for cash, and I have a great relationship with all of them! A few branches have had a couple of hardcore tellers that have asked for my account number when going in, but at the branches I still use I intentionally go to tellers that I have a good relationship with. So, I am getting the last laugh in that regard. Plus, I managed to find a bank that even though I don't have an account they allow me to use their counting machine for free! I just try not to use them too often; don't want to wear out my welcome!

The economy is changing. I just read a news article about how people with perfect credit are about to suffer. Banks are about to pull back huge amounts of credit from credit card users that pay their balance in full each month. This pullback will of course affect the credit ratings of these people (like me) and effect interest rates and etc. Seems crazy to me to upset a good customer, they're the bread and butter. However, this economy has created some very short-sighted thinking by the banks, no long term strategies to keep customers happy, only short term maximum profit.

TT, I see your point and there is just one thought that comes to mind, all business are doing business to make money. I see no reason to stop an income,as opposed to some income, I also am of the belief that there is "something more going on here"? Just my opinion......
