I would like to start roll hunting just for a more economical way to acquire some coins. I figure I could purchase the rolls and deposit whatever I don't take into my bank account. I am just curious as to what you all do. How many rolls should I get at a time? Are there any denominations that are worth while to do or do they all work pretty well? (Really stupid question) What exactly am I looking for? I mean I know it is a good way to find quality coins, but is there anything special I should look for? Any help on routine or any advice is much appreciated! -Thanks

This is a do what feels good endeavor. Personally I search cents & nickels. I've heard half dollar roll hunters sometimes do well but there are no halves to be found at my local banks. As far as quantity-whatever your bankroll and patience will allow. Just get a book or on line guide to rare and variety coins for your denomination and start squinting. Good Luck !

I mainly search cents! I have a machine called a ryedale that sorts copper from zincs and I keep all my copper cents and return the zincs. I also look for the big Doubled dies. I keep all wheats and indian heads I found also. As far as what to look for vareity wise, I look at several different dates for different things. 1970s small date 1972 doubled die 1982 doubled die reverse small date 1983 doubled die reverse 1984 doubled earlobe 1992p and D Close AM1997 doubled earlobe 1998,1999,2000 Wide AM. and other coins from 93-2008 for possible Wide AM2006 doubled earlobe Coppercoins.com is a good site to look at for others. I just try to find the big ones.

I find that this book can be very helpful "Strike It Rich with Pocket Change" by Ken Potter and Brian Allen. The Newest edition to this book came out in April and can be found at any good book store for around $17 or less if you have a discount card. I personally search cents and halves. I think that I am going to shy away from halves due the rapid decline in rolls that contain anything of value. I may sill get the customer wrapped rolls when they come in, but I am thinking of moving to nickels.

What you search really all depends on what you collect and what you are looking for. If your looking for silver than without a doubt halves would be the best denomination to start with. There is more silver floating around in halves than any other denomination. But if your interested in puting together a high grade Memorial cent collection or a jefferson collection then go ahead and get some cents and nickels to search through. I reconmend using the 'search' function on the forum and search for coin roll hunting or something of that nature. You can find plenty of information about it on the forum. Coin roll hunting does have a couple stipulated rules though. One, do not use the same bank to pick up coins and to drop your coins. Have one bank be your pick up bank and the other bank be your drop bank. Some members on here have several drop banks. The other rule is that it takes patience, lots and lots of patience. If you ever want any motivation though....I suggest going to a website called foundinrolls.com. The guy who runs it probably has searched around a million rolls of coins by now, no joke, and he has found lots of cool stuff.

"I think that I am going to shy away from halves due the rapid decline in rolls that contain anything of value." I beg to differ. The past month I've found more silver than I have in the rest of my coin roll hunting career. The longer the economy stays bad the better the hunting will get, halves especially since they tend not to circulate so the silver stays in boxes in banks. -XoG

Hard times get the public cashing in their coin jars that they have been saving for yrs and unfortunately (for them) cashing in their collections.
I would ask for rolls brought in to your teller. Boxes are still not a bad idea b/c this is happening all over the country..just depends how long the box has been sitting in reserve.
Happy Hunting..remember the joy is in the journey.

Thanks for the great advice! The multiple banks thing should be fairly easy to accomplish in my neighborhood so I am not too concerned. I think I am going to go pick up that book you mentioned Tim and start with pennies and nickels, maybe a roll of halves if I can get a hold of them.
That site you mentioned Elimist has some cool finds. His nickel finds are amazing.

To each their own Greckel ...... whatever makes you happy and meets your budget. For me ..... I am by nature a 'treasure hunter' and very much enjoy the anticipation of opening a new roll ...... 99% of the time it's the same old thing ...... but that 1% when a special coin shows up .... well ..... that keep me going to the next roll. Personally I have chosen to roll search nickels. They seem to be under-appreciated by many ... and for some good reasons. You'll never get rich collecting nickels ..... but .... I humbly submit that the 1938 - 2009 Jefferson nickel circulation strike collection is the only complete 50 year+ US coin collection that can today still be collected from circulation. Whatever you choose ..... have fun! Best David

Nickelsearcher: Thank you for the encouragement. I too am thinking about hunting for nickels. The rolls are fairly cheap and nickels have long since been my favorite denomination of coins.
CoinNut: That site is great! Thanks.

There are no rules when it comes to roll searching. My main objective is half dollars and yesterday I picked up 10 really good rolls at a bank I'd never been to before. (60-40% & 25-90% of which 8 were Bennies). So silver is still out there. When I can't find many halves I'll pick up rolls of whatever and look through those. So search whatever you want & Just remember to have fun!
