I have been searching for the 1965 large beads variety for over a year and a half now. Other than one that is listed at $14,000 on ebay, I don't think I've seen another for sale. Are there any 5 cent experts out there that can comment on how scarce the large bead variety is?

Very scarce. I owned/sold one about a year ago (ICCS MS63) on ebay for very close to full trend price. I purchased it from a collector, who claimed to have found it at one other amongst a few hundred rolls of 1965's he had stashed away decades ago.

I wonder how many of such rarities sit unchecjed in modest collections due to ignorance or not bothering because of the odds?
A question:
What is the PL situation? SP?

So what's the reason for the scarcity of this coin?
Is it due to the fact that it is a modern variety? Meaning not a lot have been discovered, or even looked for.
Is there any information from the mint on the reason for two different obverse die? Or how many of each die we're used to mint the 85 million 5 cent coins that year?

Too many people looking for the detatched jewel and not focusing on the beads. You might have better luck checking proof sets as some of the large beads are believed to have been found in proofs.
