I'm relatively new to coin collecting. My brother recently inherited several coins from our grandfather, and as we were looking through them we noticed that our 1957 silver dime had an unusual date.

1957-Silver-Dime-Date-Error?

As you can see, the 7 isn't printed properly. Here are additional photos of the whole coin:

Does anybody have any idea what could've caused this and if it's worth anything? Thanks ahead of time!

I actually think it was damaged! At any rate, it's still silver, so worth $1 or so.

The date is damaged, notice that the 5 is displaced as well as more damage to the bottom of the 1. Damage like this is typically caused by coin counting/wrapping machines. As mentioned, it still contains ~$1 worth of silver.

Welcome to the forum snowgyre. Are those die trails in the motto and date?

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone, as well as the information! I had no idea coin counting machines could do this kind of damage, it's good to keep in mind.

junjiesalvador, I think those "die trails" may be an artifact of my digital camera. I don't really see anything inherently obvious on the coin itself, so if there are any die trails they're hard for me to see with my naked eye.

I think more like coin wrapper damage. But the end result is a damaged coin.

Welcome to the family!!

I have checked out the photo and can't help but ask, why are there no other residual "drastic" damage marks on this Obverse if this is from ANY type of damage (post mint], I see the motto has what appears to be worn die trails in the motto but think there is something else going on here, Just my opinion, I do not think this is the resultant factor of a "coin counter".

I do not see, and I would think it would be obvious, more damage from what ever did this, if it was post mint, just an observation......, Anyone?

Pretty new at this also but I would think for this type of damage the rim would be effected more. I too see what looks like trailer on the date and worn die damage to the "WE T". The "In God We Trust" looks really effected from a worn die. The trailers under the 5 and 7 just look to natural to me. Be interesting how the Pros call this one.
