Strike through: An object was between the die and the planchet at the time of striking, became imbedded in the coin and then fell away after the coin was ejected leaving a depression in the coin.

Retained strike through: An object was between the die and the planchet at the time of striking, became imbedded in the coin, and has not fallen out.

Thanks too for the info Conder101. I can't make out that object. If it's a retained strick through it must be a very hard one.
