I would like the opinions of my collecting peers. I am thinking of placing my early proof sets in these holders. The ones that came from the mint in those 5 or 6 little bags. Am I looking at a value reduction like I would with the cellophane and newer type containments?

These are not airtight. Your proof coins will be exposed to the surrounding air. Over time, they will tone. I have always liked the Capital holders for select MS coins.

I think it's nice to have 1 or 2 proof sets in the plastic holders, but IMO I'll take proofs in their original mint wrapper. I hate those snap together Whitman set holders with a passion. I started collecting proof sets starting with 1964 and working back, I got to 1959 and all my coin dealer had was a set in one of those dreaded Whitman snaps. So he let me swap the coins into a "capital plastic" holder and gave me a few dollars off. It's a very nice looking set, but at the next coin show, guess what year proof set I'm going to buy in the original mint wrapper?

BTW, the reason I don't like them are
1. the coins are loose inside, especially the dime
2. I've had a few crack, especially by the dollar/half dollar coin
3. they are not airtight
4. many proof coins I looked at in these holders had marks, hits, smudges, and what I hate most, fingerprints on them...
5. I like to know, for a fact, that the coins I buy (at least proof coins) have never been touched, swapped, messed with, etc.

Sorry for the rant, but that's my honest opinion.

Just so you know, the mint provided solid plastic proof set holders (from 1968 to date) are not air tight either.

I have boxes full of proof sets and they still look as they did when I put them there. Some for over 40 years. I also break open may of them for my Albums. Most Albums have slots for proof coins so I put proof coins in those. So far nothing has happened to any of them in all these years.

I have broken and will continue to break my proof sets apart for my Dansco albums.

For the 1955-1964 sets in the single cello package, Capital Plastics used to make a holder that the entire set fit into without removing the coins from the original package. It was nice because it protected them from accidental tearing. For earlier ones in the individual cello bags, I personally like things original but I have seen lots of sets in Capital Holders that were nice because they cherry picked out outstanding coins from several different sets. Like Just Carl, I have boxes of early sets from 56-64 still in the mailer boxes from the mint and they look just fine. A few have some toning but overall they look great.
