I'm cataloguing a collection and keep coming across beautiful coins that have been holed. As they've been used as charms or jewellery, they're pretty much pristine, certainly better than the average run of "whole" coins. Today for example I've found beautiful sixpences, 1883 & 1888; an 1826 shilling and numerous fractional farthings. All holed. Does anyone collect these things, or are they just scrap?

The sad thing is that most of the numismatic value is lost in these coins. The only exceptions are when the coins is very rare.

Some people do collect holed coins. I don't imagine they pay much more than scrap value. In fact I saw where a forum member was interested in another members holed coins. Are there any Love Tokens in the lot? Sometimes they bring a nice premium.

Personally, I like high grade holed coins. It is a very economical way to get a coin with nice detail that I normally could not afford. Also, almost every semi-key or key date IHC, Liberty nickel or Buffalo 5¢ is holed or damaged in some way. I would prefer a holed VF coin to an AG-Good example of the same coin any day.

I know a dealer who deals in high grade type and most of his coins are $1000 +. Well his personal collection is 3 coins and a type set of holed coins. He will not hole a coin but if he finds one that has been holed it goes right in the set. the more holes the better.

Thanks all. I've decided that as most of these pieces are intrinsically beautiful, to make a virtue of the damage and clean them, add a ring and mount them on silver chains. This way they may sell and I get to practise various methods of dirt and clag removal where it can't do any harm.

I posted on another thread that my grandfather soldered mercs intro a bracelet... I think I'd be interested in getting few holed coins for a necklace for my daughters. If anyone has an old holed coin they are looking to get rid of, PM me.
I'm thinking of something the size of a half-dollar or a dollar (and I am also talking about something with little intrinsic value, just looking for a cool token necklace for a 7 and 5 year old, who may just wind up losing the coin).

As to collecting holed coins, it is just one of the many, many aspects of coin collecting that is now the latest craze. Not long ago it was Beanie Babies, Baseball Cards, etc and now it's coins. I've met collectors that specialize in Counterfeits, old coins only, one type of coin such as Roosevelt dimes or those State Quarters. There are error collectors and even dealers that sell mostly or all error coins. I've seen numerous types of jewlery made from coins and not long ago a toilet seat of plastic filled with coins. Coins are fun so collect what you want.
