I have been offered a large collection of silver coins - most are common dates or scarcer coins with problems so a Bullion Value approach is fair. The vast majority are German and Australian with a bunch of other countries. None of the 10% junk silver most are 0.625 fine or better.

I want to be fair but with spot silver closing over $14.50 today I don't want to be holding the bag either.

How do dealers figure a fair price?

I normally pay 50% of spot on junk silver with he assumption I have to melt and refine it and essay it to get it to recognised bullion form. If I pay more than this I loose out if I have to send it to melt.

For the sake of other collectors, why not offer them to other younger collectors to give them a chance before it gets to a stage where only elite members can collect. Besides, maybe a young collector can only afford what a dealer is willing to pay, so you are doing them a favor. :)

I am planning to sell the collection as coins NOT for silver. I completely agree that common coins still have interest to kids. I recall the hours I spent as a pre-teen hunting through junk boxes. That was back in the day when you could still get a worn large cent for a quarter and an Indian cent for a nickel.

I have an aversion to melting coins - even modern counterfeits.

Many coins in this particular collection have some historical interest. It includes 105 Nazi coins - 50 are 5 Marks. They are mostly common dates/mints but a few are nice grades. In the Australian there are perhaps 60 of the coins made in the US for Australia during WWII. A few are near EF but with low catalog values.
