Whats your opinion: Will the 2009 mint set be worth purchasing as an investment? Do you think they will be any more valuable due to the low 2009 dime and nickel mintage's? (also does anyone have any idea what the issue price will be?)

I think they will for just those reasons and more. First, they are all Satin finish and totally different than BU coins. Eventually these satin finish coins will need to be included in albums much like the Proofs are currently. Add to that, the Mint set will have somewhat limited production. Then the fact that the four new Lincoln Cents will be struck in the Copper alloy and not Zinc. This will create 4 semi-key Lincoln Cents instantly. I'm very anxious to get my hands on a couple sets! ~ Jim

Only time will tell. In my opinion, the 2009 mint sets have a better chance to appreciate in value than all of the other satin finish mint sets.

Who knows....according to Numismaster.com Sales of United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Sets will be delayed from the middle of July until an unspecified date later this year, the Mint announced July 6. A problem with protecting the uncirculated surfaces of the new Lincoln Cent from premature toning is the cause of the delay.

Yes, Yes. Yes. I think the 2009 mint and proof sets will be a good investment. With the new cents and the territorial quarters in the set it should be popular. This is only a personal opinion of mine.

I am even thinking of buying one, and I don't have a single US mint set. Even over here on Oz, people are talking about them.

I thik there will be some many people chomping at the bit to get these sets because of the nickels, dimes, lower mintages on the territorial quarters, and the copper Lincoln cents that the mintage for this years mint sets will probably be the highest in a long time. Kind of like the 1987 set when it was announced ahea of time that the half dollars would be mint set only that year. It saw a 50% increase in the mintage. I would think the 2009 will have an even greater % increase. It wouldn't surprise me to se a 3 or even 4 million set mintage.

I'm confused...at the coin show I was at recently, several vendors were selling 2009 mint sets. Could they have been proof sets, since it appears that the mint sets haven't yet been released? They were in hard plastic covers, I think three sets to a box, one for the cents, one for quarters, and one for everything else. They were asking about $30 for them I think.

They were the proof sets, and I think there should have been 4 sets per box if I remember right from the US mint website.

Yes, four holders for the 2009 proof sets. The fourth holder being for the Dollars (Sacagawea and Presidents).

I agree with everything Condor said.
One thing he didn't mention is that with the general Lincoln frenzy/craze/mass insanity, the drug hasn't worn off yet and the flippers will be out in force.
He interestingly mentions the 1987 mint set - which has fallen greatly from it's originally heights. I personally think the 1987 mint set is a STEAL at current prices, but no one is buying.
The same fate is awaiting all these recent mint products - it's like the stock market - you have to know when to get the heck out.

Was the 1987 mint set of low mintage or something?

No, it actually has a higher mintage. As Conder said... Quote: Kind of like the 1987 set when it was announced ahea of time that the half dollars would be mint set only that year. It saw a 50% increase in the mintage. The only way to get 1987 Kennedy half dollars was from the mint set, so people ordered them in higher numbers than usual.

I think this could be a record year for the number of mint sets/proof sets ordered because of the Lincoln cents and the variety of other coins offered...but then again alot of people are hurting for cash and these sets are getting pretty expensive...may not be ordering as heavy as anticipated.
