Does it matter if the edge lettering on a dollar coin is upside down or right side up as far as price differences? Does this count as a variety in the Red Book?

No difference. The coins orientation is random as they are sent through the roll press to incuse the lettering. Theoretically the outcome is 50/50.

Good to know. I was noticing on ebay sellers were marketing these as varieties.

I think it does make a difference on proofs though. They're supposed to be a set way aren't they?

Yes, the edge lettering for the proofs is applied with a segmented collar at the same time the coin is struck so it should be impossible to have upside down lettering but you never know

But there is a variety of Proof T Jefferson dollar where the three segments were placed in the press out of order. Instead of 2007 S E PLURIBUS UNUM IN GOD WE TRUST, it says 2007 S IN GOD WE TRUST E PLURIBUS UNUM. After it was discovered they made changes to the segment dies so they couldn't be put in the press out of order.

I would check all the 2007 proofs for that error. Since it was discovered in the proof sets that means that some all of the proof president dollars for that year had been produced before they discovered the problem and made corrections to the segment dies. So it could have happened on the other three coins as well and just have been discovered yet.

I don't like the edge lettering. I like to see the date and mint mark in my 2x2 holders.

I agree as well.

I have not gotten a Dansco for the Presidential dollars yet because I am not sure if I want to collect them by mint or just put all of the proofs in a date only album.

Not easily seeing the edge makes collecting by mint pointless. At least the date is easily determined by what President is on the obverse (and the two Cleveland dollars will be differentiated by the term information).

Good thing I have not really acquired a lot of circulated Presidential dollars!

I agree that the lack of date/mint mark on the face of the dollars makes them less desireable for collectors. Does the mint have someone that knows what collectors are looking for to advise them on design? They should be concerned about this...they are making a ton of profit selling proof sets/mint sets/rolls etc to collectors.

How about those little bumps on the edges of the proof Sacagawea? What purpose do they serve? They don't fit right in a small dollar direct fit air tite or a small dollar plastic rolls...

they will probably make a dansco album like the new NGC holders where you have to turn the book every way but the right way to see them

What exactly was the rationale of making edge lettering?
