Hi all I'm new to collecting, but I love the romance of Morgan dollars, and I went out and bought a job lot of them (58 in total).

Once I get the hang of getting the right size and quality to upload them to this forum I will, over the coming months, post all of them here.

Any feedback will be much appreciated, quality of photography, size of image, and any information on the Morgan dollar itself

b17cc,

The pictures are a bit small to make a call on grade or variety. Try to size them as close to 100kb without going over. Another option is (when you reach 50 posts) is to request a photo gallery from Forum Mom (Susanlyn). If you post them to the gallery (around 250~300kb shows good detail) you can post them with a link. Or use photobucket to link larger pictures.

All that aside, it looks to be an XF example of the 1878-P, 7-Tail Feather, 3rd reverse. Look closely at the top feather on the arrow (reverse). If slanted, it's a 3rd reverse. If parallel to the bottom feather, it's a second reverse. These are quite pricey in MS64 and higher.

Thanks for the feedback. This is the 2nd Morgan in my collection. I seem to be spending hours trying to get the image size down. Hopefully this one will be better.

I'm using a Canon 40d with a 100mm Macro lens, set on small image, but I still have to do a lot of manipulation on Photoshop to get the size down. Any tips? I have tried uploading images to ImageShack without success

That's a nice 78-S.

A couple of thoughts on your pictures
- Crop as much as you can before resizing. The coin is all we need to see.
- Check the Coin Photography thread for tips on "white balance", "lighting", "set-ups", and anything else that strikes your fancy.

Photographing coins is not an easy task. But once you've got it down you will get consistent results.

If you have any specific questions on photography I recommend you post them in the coin photography section. Give that section a look and I'm sure you'll find some immediate help.

, to the community,

58 Morgans, that's a goodly bunch of coins. From your images #1 looks to be in the range of EF-40 and #2 a much better picture I would grade as AU-55 based on some wear I see in the hair and on the eagles wins tips.

I agree with you B17. The Morgan dollars would be one have my favourite series of coins to collect and on the whole they are fairly reasonably priced compared to some older coins.
Cheers
