Is it worth collecting circulated modern coins? I know some prefer this and some prefer uncirculated.
Rest in Peace

Things are only "worth" collecting if you want to collect them. I like the challenge of getting coins from circulation. On the other hand, it's not "worth" it to me to collect gold coins(were I able to do it). Have fun & enjoy what you collect.

I prefer uncirculated coins myself. But there is something to be said about worn coins. Only if coins could talk...

I do both with my Australian coins. I have a complete set of BU decimal coins and numerous incomplete sets of circulated coins. I do this because there is no huge challenge in putting together a BU set of Aussie decimals, you can find virtually everything at any coin shop.

The circulated coins are a different story all together. I have only managed to put together a couple of complete sets in over 20 years of collecting. I am working on trying to complete a couple of sets for my two sons at the moment. If they develop an interest in collecting (my 4 year old is sort of interested, but prefers stamps), they will be able to put together BU sets for themselves. They will find it very difficult to assemble circulated sets in the future.

I love the look of a nice BU coin, but when you are looking at page after page of them, I kind of lose interest. Every page of circulated coins holds 20 coins that all look different, have different stories to tell, and best of all, only cost me face value.

Keep in mind, it's possible to find mint state coins in circulation. Just because a coin was put in circulation it doesn't necessarily mean it shows any trace of wear.

Well it kinda depends...what are you wanting to collect?
If you are wanting to fill a book or are trying to keep finding better graded coins with each pocketful then it's a great way.

Personally all I do is do a quick scan and dump them in a jar

I get the mint sets from the mint for my modern collections, When I started doing that, I still had "the itch" to look through change, so I keep my brothers set up to date that way.

Had I not already had my sets started, I would think really hard before starting a circulated set, now. With all the games that the Mint, and the government is playing around with coins, instead of doing something that needs to be done for this country, it is frustrating. They are making too many coins, i.e. the Kennedy half dollar, and the Sacagawea dollar, that they are producing, but not putting into circulation.

I'll say again, it's just frustrating.

But thats just me. The real answer is what everybody else has been saying, and that is to collect what makes you happy.
