I'm not sure if the coin my kids found is modern or not. It has ribbed edges like a coin and is silver, but is very lightweight and has no value listed on the coin. The front has a bust of James Monroe with his name at the top and the bottom says 5th president 1817-1825 with stars down the sides. The back is worn but has his signature at the top and says party democratic republican a revolutionary hero he issued the Monroe Doctrine warnine Europe to -----of north and south america. It then has the presidential seal on the bottom. Any ideas? My kids are dying to know what they've found. Thanks! Tried to upload a picture with no luck. The coin is so bent and battered it only looked like a blob. It is silver in appearance with ribbed edges though.

Lightweight? Sounds Aluminium. A picture would really really help in this case.

There are lots of those guys around. Haven't seen one exactly like that with a signature on it though. It's definitely a token of some sort and from the description it's made of aluminum.

We love pictures. Even poor quality ones can help us find out some more info about it.

I have the above coin mentioned in readable condition. Can anyone tell me what I've got?

There is a sure fire way to see if it's aluminum or silver...

Floating aluminum coins on water
https://goccf.com/t/166461

I filled a glass to the top (almost over flowing) and slid the coins onto it horizontally.

Being bent might make it harder, but it might work as a boat shape... then again if it silver not much will make it float.

I've got copper rounds with Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln. The small amount of research I had done on them seemed to indicate they were made of 90% copper at the US mint as part of a commemorative presidential medal series.

It's aluminum, silver doesn't get that colour.

The side with Monroe is pretty much copied from his Presidential dollar, so I would say this is less than 10 years old.
