I thought that all SF proof sets contained silver coins, not clad. Can anyone confirm? I was in a coin shop the other day and they had a bunch of quarters from the late seventies for $1.50. That seemed cheap if they were silver.

From what I can gather from Red Book, the silver proofs would be 1932-64, 1976, and 1992-1998. Proof sets from the seventies would have been clad.

Until 1992, all of the SF proof sets, with the exception of special sets, were clad. Starting in 1992, the Mint started producing the Silver proof sets. Each year since 1992, they have produced both a clad, and silver proof set.

Yes, the late 70's, with the exception of 76, would be clad.

Be careful with the 1976 set, only the three coin Bicentennial sets were 40% silver while the six coin full sets were CuNi clad. Silver proof sets were discontinued after 1964 and then resumed in 1992 and continue today.
