When I got back into collecting about 12 years ago there was a local shop I frequented. The dealer was an elderly gentleman with a very easygoing and friendly demeanor. I purchased quite a few nice coins from him and was saddened when he decided to retire and close the store. He passed away a few years ago and is greatly missed.

He was a conservative grader in my opinion. This Morgan dollar has an outstanding strike and excellent luster. It has many small abrasions (which are exaggerated in the photos) plus a few small toning spots. Nevertheless, it has decent eye appeal. By current standards I'd probably call it MS-62. The old dealer called it MS-60 and priced it accordingly. I'm still pleased that it remains in my collection. It always reminds me of that gentleman dealer.

Sad to hear he passed. I am new to coin collecting, but am very fond of a local shop here, whom I trust as I've been buying bullion from them for a while. I love going in there, brousing, and picking up and looking at coins I'd like to buy. There's something about the tactile experience that ebay doesn't have, and the friendliness that is missing in online auctions. Never mind the advice! I don't buy from ebay, partially because I'm new and do not want to get ripped off, but mostly because I love the whole shop experience!

I hope you find another shop, and I'm glad you have that coin, as it will bring back pleasant thoughts of your times in the shop.

Oh so true. When I lived in Ft Lauderdale there were numerous shops in the area. I frequented only two. The first was run by a crotchety
old cuss. I went there (on my lunch break from work) for the 1/2 off bargain bins and 3/$5.00 Walkers which I quickly resold when I returned to work. I never spent any real money with him because he was so unfriendly. The other shop was much smaller and owned by a likeable guy. I would hang around for hours on my day off from work shooting the bull with this guy, asking questions to which he would gladly answer. He knew I would spend money before I left, and would always try to find a coin that I needed if he didn't have it in his inventory (even low dollar stuff).
