I've recently been looking at some of the peoples 7070's and was inspired to get one =) so I have one on the way and was just wondering, what coins should I buy first, or last (considering I have a limited income(I'm 13))

Hi CCK , I've never looked at a 7070 as I was under the impression its generally high end value coins that go in there.Gold and so on. Best of luck with your endevour, nothing like starting early. Some of the large cents are affordable and I think they have a place in a 7070..not sure. 3c nickels are also obtainable in reasonable conditions. One area that prices seem low is halfs, frankies, walkers and even barbers. I bought the blank danscos for dimes, dollars, halfs and World coins..they fill up faster than id anticipated.Good luck

Start how every you want to. You might want to start with a grade range for the majority. Some of the coins are going to bet really expensive past VG but the majority should be easy to get in VF through AU and a few in BU. Start with what you can afford. Dont decide to start with the hard stuff and then buy really bad looking coins that are affordable. Maybe save those until you are older. If you have any of the coins already put them in. I personally like to have a few coins on each page and spread it out. Do what you want because there are no rules to coin collecting.

You should be able to fill 40% or so of the holes easily with BU coins inexpensively. Generally high grade type coins from about 1931 and on will be inexpensive. So with limited income, I would fill these slots first. Earlier 20th century type coins will be more expensive in higher grades, and they get more and more expensive as you travel back to the early 19 century type coins.

I agree, there is a small amount of the coins that are actually over 200 dollars even in relatively higher grades as long as you are not doing the Gold page. One thing about the albums is you can work on it for years and dont have to be in any big hurry to finish it. You can start with the least expensive coins now in high grades and then when you get older (working on it all through the years obtaining other coins for the album) and have a job and more income get some of the harder to obtain coins that you would never to be able to obtain right now and still get years of enjoyment out of the album. The Mercury dimes are very affordable in high grades (I bought a MS-67 for like 8 bucks last year) so the sky is the limit on the grades you would like to have for the album. If you would rather focus on lower grade coins for it then you can just about finish the whole album rather easily as long as you aren't going to be looking for totally problem free coins. I have seen a totally finished 7070 album with nothing but coins that were holed (had holes drilled in them) and others that were problem free with a minimum grade of MS-60 so anywhere in between(what ever looks best to you or you think would achieve the goal you want the album to look like when its finished) so in no way is there any set in stone way to do a 7070 album, it is all about what the collector is trying to achieve with the album. I will tell yoiu this, I had really gotten burnt out on collecting all together until I got my 7070 album and it really lit the fire back in my belly for collecting in general because its not like looking at different coins that look alike (like I collected at first with Morgans) and is a very enjoyable set to try to finish Quote: I've never looked at a 7070 as I was under the impression its generally high end value coins that go in there That is so not true, I have seen completed albums that the owner said they had less than $1000.00 in the complete album including the price of the album itself and I think everyone that enjoys the history of the coins and the different designs should atleast have one laying around because it is a very beautiful set when you flip through the pages of history

I have to ask the obvious question , how does one complete a 7070 for under or at $1000 ? When I made my statement I was including the gold page which as I understand is part of the 7070? Even discounting the gold , the cheapest 20c and Trade dollars I've seen go for around $100 each, poor condition. Im not seeing how a 7070 page could be filled never mind a full album for $1000,not disputing either as maybe these guys didnt have to buy the coins?Might have still been in circulation lol

The best advice I would offer is to go about it slowly with great thought. I would suggest you pick a coin, for example a Seated Liberty dollar, study the series, read books, ask questions of other collectors (like here on the forum), go to coin shows and view the coins and then save up the money until you can buy the coin you want. Even if you only fill a couple of spots a year, in the long run you will be happier with higher grade coins that you "know about from study" then with a bunch of holes filled with low grade or problem coins that you purchased just to fill the holes. There is no race to try and finish quickly. If you are 13 you have years of collecting fun ahead of you. I also think you should go for the hard coins first, they keep getting harder to acquire.

I can't see a thousand dollar type set having much eye appeal though. Also, the gold page is completely optional, and most dansco albums don't come with it. You can find a nice cheap raw MS wheat to put in the album. your call though.

You can pick up a nice BU 1950's wheatie for less than a buck. I think there are a lot of holes that can be filled inexpensively if you look for deals and buy slowly. There's a bunch of coins that can be filled with nice coins for under $50, more that can be filled for under $20, and a number you can fill from circulation or the $5 bin. I think it would be a real challenge to complete one for less than $1000 but I think it could be done for under $2000 if you stuck with G/VG level coins for some of the expensive ones. The key as others have said is to take your time. Good luck! Ken

I am working on one now. The best advice I can give you is to take your time and buy the best coin/grade you can afford. Since your budget is quite limited right now I would go for the less expensive moderns, walkers, franklins, kennedys. Most of the 20th century coins can be bought inexpensively. I would wait on the Seated dollars, trade, classic large cent, ect. until your budget grows. With you being 13 time should not be a concern. Even if the set takes you 10 years to complete you will only be 23. You have a big jump on the majority of people trying to complete this set. I think you would get much more enjoyment out of the set if you patiently wait for the right coin to come along unstead of stick the first thing you see into the album.

I wondered , if the Mods agreed , might we run a contest to see who can fill a virtual 7070 for the cheapest. Evidence of purchases can be properly dated ended auctions from your watched list. Each competiter will obviously know his virtual cost which will include shipping,so if Mr X enters one in at $1001 and has the saved watched auctions to show then Mr Y would know its hardly worthwhile entering his that virtually cost $2000. In the case of fakes or counterfeits the entry is disqualified.
To make it worthwhile each competitor might "donate" one coin which would have its place in a 7070.A picture of said coin provided to mark your entry to the competition and an agreed time limit.
Thoughts are welcome , what do you think Mods ? It isn't exactly gambling and the more people in it , could be a very nice prize indeed.
