Hello,

I've been collecting Peace dollars for a bit now and am about 4 away from completing the set: 34-s, 35-s, 24-s and 27-s.

(My '21 and '28 are about VF-XF+)

Most of the commons are in slider/MS condition with lowest grade being VF. However I have been perusing some complete set auctions on ebay and am starting to wonder if it might be worth it to buy a full set in great condition (seem to be around $1000-1500) with the 100% return policy and cherry pick from both sets to make a nice complete on, then sell off the extras.

I know others do this but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions/opinions?

Am I correct with that price range?
Rest in Peace

I would be wary of inadvertantly purchasing an altered 28-s in a complete set, as that coin would make up much of the value. Even with a return policy, the seller might say that you switched coins if you return(It's easier to make that claim with full sets). I'm just trying to look at the worst possible situation. Other than that, I see nothing wrong with that approach. You might considering purchasing a set that is intentionally missing the 28, just to be safe, and be cheaper.

Does anyone else have any opinion? What is the current market range for an AU+ set?

I would guess you can get a complete AU set for around $1500. As said before, you need to be cautious with the 1928-p

Once you hit AU, the 1928P ceases to be THE key coin of the series and the 1934S takes over until MS64. It is important that the 34S is truly AU because Numismedia has EF40 @$180 and then AU50 jumps to $450 and then another big jump to MS60 @$1710.

I sell sets at coin shows all the time, even on E-bay.
But to ensure that you are purchasing a "AU" coin you should look
local. Using your method of purchasing 2 sets and combing them would cost you 1,200 - 1,500 each. That is close to $3,000.00. You want to
get some of your money back for the un-used coins. Attempting to sell
cleaned and altered coins are hard pressed, you will take a loss.
You are better off with the money back policy and purchase
AU to MS coins at auction then combine your set. You will save money, by not having to attempt to sell off unused coins. Your money is protected if you do get a cleaned or altered coin.
I know this as I sell SLAB PCGS common date Peace dollars as MS 62 for 30 to 40 dollars. Taking your time and be picky with your selection, later you will not have to up-grade. My self I now have a
ms 65 and above collection I am putting together. Evan though I'm a dealer I still have the love of collecting.

I have been lucky enough to purchase the coins I do have for probably about $600 max, so the con of buying 2 sets for $1200-1500 doesn't really exist. I conservatively estimate $800 in value in my current set and was expecting to pay $1200~ for an AU/BU set to do the swapping.

In this way, I'm looking to pay $400 more for the coins I need (which I see pricing at $470+ in low AU - plus factoring the value of any upgrades.

I do like the idea of looking local as the ebay auctions I have been interested in, I haven't been satisfied with the quality of photos vis a vis a price point of this level. Perhaps I'll consider a set minus the '28 as well.
