I have been wanting one of these for a while now to add to my type set...being that I live and grew up in California. This is a period 1 1856 50 cent fractional that I recently purchased(the 25 centers are just too darn tiny). This is a very VERY difficult coin to photograph, so I will try to get some better shots up later. Anyways, opinions?

Beautiful coin Congratulations. I also grew up out here and am a recreational gold prospector who also owns a couple of these. I have an 1853 Half Dollar BG-415 and a 25C "Goofy Head". Not sure of the BG#. They are graded by NCS. I know the # is on the holder but escapes me right now. I believe your coin is solid gold as most of these post 1855, were plated and not solid. Again, your coin is very nice!

Thanks Vermont! Mine is a BG-434, which I understand is considered an R-4(75-200 examples known). In the world of cal gold, that's not considered rare, but certainly isn't common either. I think it is pure gold too as a period 1 coin, but I'm not really sure.

And NGC too! I know the BG-415 is pretty scarce. I am still trying to find the website that has rarity. I forgot it. Yours is a period 1 coin and is solid gold.

Viewing past heritage auctions by BG number is one way to research. Also gives you good photos and past auction values.
The BG-415 is an R-5. :-)

edit- what's interesting is if you look at the older auctions pre-2003, they have it listed as an R-6. Then it later became a low R-5. I'm guessing they discovered a lot more of them at some point.
