What are your thoughts on the satin finish mint set coins? Like/Dislike?

They are different than circulation strikes, this is a fact that cannot be denied. I go back and forth on my personal opinion for various reasons. It really does not affect me since I collect from circulation and only get coins from mint sets when I have to (for example, a 1973 Eisenhower dollar or 1987 Kennedy half dollar).

I'm not really sure I like the satin finish. To me they just look sorta dull. What was the rationale for using this finish? I think regular business strikes look more flashy and desirable.

They do have an "interesting" look to them. I do not know if I would call them dull, but I cannot justify paying the premium for them.
The rationale? More money for the mint.

I do have a few of these satin finish Statehood Quarters in my collection but personally I think the business strikes look better.

You may be right. I have never seen a Satin Finish coin directly compared to a business strike. I have only seen the mint sets at coin shows and did not try to make any comparisons there.

I always assumed that my "Mint Sets" would be the best possible example grade of MS Biz. strikes that I could ever get.......in a way.......now....that's just not possible to be the case.....since they are in fact even "technically" different. Now.....there will be no U.S. Mint Uncirculated "Sets" that are really business strikes.....am I making sense ? An "SF" coin is NOT a biz. strike coin ! In this way.......I don't like the SF AT ALL ! Now.....I'll just have to pull them from circulation in the best quality I can find from BOTH mints......which will be very "iffy" at best. And there won't be an "Official Set" of them......at least since 2005 when this "money overlord big brother greed happy fest with a pretense of stimulating "coin collecting" began !! ...... Bring back my biz. strikes in an Uncirculated Mint Set ! .....

Sounds like we'll be getting our business strikes fresh from rolls since mint sets are not a viable option anymore.

On the other hand......this means that high quality MS examples of Business Strike coins from "both" mints will be VERY RARE.......since there will be no more "official" U.S. Mint sets of these ! Sure, we can spend EVEN MORE MONEY on the "two roll sets" of each coin IF it's even offered on a particular coin....but that's not really a sensible option IMHO, and wouldn't land you "all" of that years coins anyway. And searching boxes of Stringer rolls is the most likely....but still a "Prarie Dog Shoot" if you ask me..... I mean how many MS-70 and MS-65 Grades are we pulling from our "pocket change" ?......and how many people can/will be able to do it from BOTH mints ?...... (but I still don't like it !)

AS has been already stated this has and is going to continue to have an effect on how we collect. We will simply have to wait to see if this is going to be good or a bad thing for coin collecting. I will say this , anyone wanting good quality business strike coins, 2005 till now needs to start roll searching as soon as possible. Each day and year that goes by is going to make it that much harder to find better business grade coins. I have a sneaky feeling that at some point in time BS coins for these years will be something coin collectors will definitely be very interested in having in higher grades.
As always just my opinion,
Mike

I would prefer if the mint sets contained regular business strike coins, not satin finish coins. I think the point of the mint set is to obtain examples of all of the coins struck for that year.
I still buy the sets but would prefer that they switch back to regular strikes.

Will Dansco add a space for the satin finish in their coin albums?

I wish they would go back to the business strikes for the mint sets too. What's next, flat, semi-gloss, and eggshell?

Quote: Will Dansco add a space for the satin finish in their coin albums? I would expect them to do so eventually. The albums will be available as just business strikes (as they are today), business strikes and proofs (as today), probably business strikes and SF coins, and with all three finish types. Currently a lot of people are still putting the SF coins into their sets instead of business strikes, but once they start listing the SF finish coins in the albums and they become an "accepted" part of a "complete" set the rush will be on for the high quality business strikes.
