My Dansco Album shows slots for 1965, 1966, and 1967 Kennedy half dollars as well as the SMS for each year. Are the 65,66, and 67 simply taken from circulated coins or what. All my Kennedys are from Uncir mint or proof sets.

Thanks,

Mike

I gather that since they only made sms sets for those years, you have the sms holes filled. You could buy uncs or get them from circulation. I gather since the rest of your set is Unc, you would probably want to purchase Uncs for those holes.

Correct, the SMS holes are covered, was just curious about the others. I have looked a little but yet to find any Uncir for those years but like I said I have not looked extensively,,, YET!!

Business strikes and the SMS coins were produced 1965-1967. Unfortunately, the quality of the business strikes from those years is usually lacking which makes the SMS coins look that much nicer.

The quality of the SMS coins range from lower-end mint state to proof-like with cameo.

If you are determined to only use coins from mint issued sets, then use a lower quality SMS set to fill the uncirculated holes and a higher quality for the SMS holes.

Finding the proof-like coins may be a difficult task, but it should give you a similar, if not the same, contrast you see with the other coins next to proofs.

Purchase a SMS mint set and cherry pick what you need. Sell the rest.
Visit a local coin show for dealers who break open sets and sell
them for all collectors.

I agree biokem - I'm assembling a complete Kennedy set and I've had to hunt quite a bit at coinshows for unc 60s that I'm willing to include in my Intercept Shield album.
Not many choice and certainly very few Gems out there.
