Greetings!
I was reading up on US Coin Facts section which I found very informative and rewarding. Just a question please, why is there no mention of a coin's thickness? On any of the coins, is it not important? (I measured a Morgan 1900, it was 3.0mm thick on the edge and 2.45mm inside, I don't know if these are the official numbers) just curious, thanks!

Diameter and weight are the only measurements noted on Coinfacts. Metal composition is also noted.

These measurements and composition are usefull to verify a coin's authenticity. If the coin's weight, diameter and composition match the mint's standards, a thickness measurement is not necessary.

A couple of side notes ... Coinfacts is no longer supported as a free site and data there is not updated. I don't know how much longer it will be available in its current form. Lastly, if you're measuring thickness you have too much free time on your hands.

I would think that thickness would be relevant only on a higher quality type coin. Once a coin starts wearing, it is the thickness that would be affected.

There are no real official figures for the thickness of coins because measuring it with any real precision isn't possible. First where do you measure it at? The rim? Reverse field to obverse device? Obverse field to rev device? Rev device to Obv device? All of those will give you different figures, and how do you make allowances for quality of strike which would also change the thickness measurments. So the only times they might have thickness figures would be for the strip or blanks. The only place I have ever seen any list of those figures with tolerances was in one of Roger Burdette's books. And if you want to know what the thicknes of the blank was for a coin it can always be calculated if you know the weight of the coin, the diameter and the specific gravity. (Diameter and SG can easily be looked up)

Thanks! The question was a result of getting too absorbed in the coin facts section, info there real interesting, suddenly the thought "why is there no Thicknesses?" thus the Question.

Thanks SeatedNut!
I do have much time now, too much?, to spend on coins!
