i have been using white vinegar to try to restore dates from Buffalo nickels, but it hasn't had great results. What else can I use? I heard about that stuff nic-a-date, does that work? where can I get that?

thanks in advance,- Brad

I bought my nic a date from a coin shop....20 odd years ago. I hear that the white vinegar method takes alot longer than nic a date. I wish I had never used nic a date on mine.

I applied it to the date area only, and it left a dark spot. Not when applied...but years later the whole area where I applied it turned dark. I think I would stick with the vinegar if I were to try it on another coin. How long did you soak your in the vinegar?

I know exactly what Ratty means , I bought a load of buffalos once without really paying too much attention.
Disappointing to find half a dozen or more had the date restored , makes the coin look like ..well.. put it this way , if anybody wants to pay the shipping ill happily send them gratis.

i tried the vinegar on three buffalo's. all too 5-7 days, and I had to change the vinegar at least twice. two of the coins produced a readable date, and the third one never did produce a readable date. after two weeks I gave up on the third coin.

Restored dates sell for substantially less than a non restored date. Usually only key or semi key dates are considered worthwhile with a restored date.

Hopefully you have not restored that one, since you dont need the date to determine what it is.

Type 1s should never be restored since it is plainly obvious what type it is
