Thanks Nic, looks like I have a large date. I am trying to fill a 1909-1973 official U.S.Mint album made by H.E. Harris. Gotta way to go yet. 30 holes left to fill.

Note the location of the bottom of the 7 and the tail of the inside part of the 9.

Hey Coop, does the mint mark always appear to be closer to the date (9) on the large date?

Your welcome Tim Stroud, same here I'm looking for a 70s small as well as a barber and Mercury dime of any year, it's doubly hard here as I am half a world away from where it's all circulating

Mint marks can be in any areas between the date/bust as they are applied to the die by hand. I've noted several different locations for the small date ones, so there are more than one die used.

Coop, I have studied this coin and date and believe that the 1970-S small date "9" has pointed ends on each end of the number 9, what do you think?

I do not believe I have ever seen either end of a small date "9" that was not pointed!

What I look for is always the number "9" if its taller than the seven, it's large, if it's the same height as seven, its small. Just like coop noted

There are more than enough diagnostic pup's for this coin, I am not in dis-agreement with any, however I am making a statement about the observation I made,EVER seen a small date 9 and it did not have both ends pointed, best to all, Mike

Mike I agree with your assessment. Here is a few images I've collected so far from the different dies (From different mint mark placements) and all have the pointed tail on the 9. Good pickup!

That's the advantage of saving images cause you never know when you might need one and glad you saved it. (I've added a bunch more to my educational files. Just waiting to use them.)
