This is personally my favorite U.S. coin design. I have acquired quite a few over the years and love em. Why did someone clean this coin!
Beautiful coin otherwise. Just venting. Man!

Can I ask, without them telling you is there any way to tell that it has been cleaned?

Especially on the obverse pic, the parallel scratches running Northeast-Southwest on the coin are a dead giveaway.

Makes me sick, but at least the dealer is honest about it. Nice to see that on
ebay once and a while!

Cleaning a coin creates friction and thus, small scratches upon the surfaces of the coin not to mention, on a MS or AU coin, impairs luster creating a "silky" or lack luster appearance. As Super pointed out, a dead giveaway.

Vermont, since these are your favorite coins, did you by chance make it to the ANA where booth 134 (PCGS) had the top registry set for flying eagles including all the varieties and a dozen or so pattern pieces? It was a mind blowing collection. 2 full dispaycases of high grade flyers

I was at the ANA LA and did in fact check that out. I almost cried when I saw those coins. I had to leave pretty quick because I wanted to take them home with me ;-) I walked around the show with my mouth wide open. I was wondering why people were staring at me. Then I saw the Brasher Doubloon and almost fainted!

What so many people forget is that at one time, not to long ago, it was considered normal to clean coins. Any coins. If you had a coin collection and showed it to people they would almost always tell you to clean them so they would look prettier. And people did. Lots of times in some businesses people would bulk clean coins so that customers wouldn't think they handled dirty money there. Food type stores would do that. So it was really normal to clean coins some time ago. One reason so many older coins have been cleaned.
