This looks like Die Deterioration with a little Machine Doubling thrown in but I just want to be sure. Thanks.

1982 and 1983 nickels for both P and D are often found like this. Especially the 1983 P. Yet they will have steps being it is the center of the die. I am not sure but maybe dies get hot striking planchets, and when they get too hot this might be some of the cause.

Hi,

This is not heat related. Five-cent planchets are hard and they really destroy the dies. The coin shows the effects of Die Deterioration.

Have Fun,
Bill

Thanks foundinrolls, that clears that up. I did not mean the planchets, each one of those is the same temperature when it gets struck but the dies get hot striking them, which would lead to deterioration.
I have seen striations going out toward the rims on some coins as well, they look like stretch marks ( not that kind ) I thought maybe overheated dies did that as well.

The dies and planchets do get hot from striking but you are talking a couple hundred degrees, nowhere near hot enough to really start causing heat related deformations. The striations going out toward the rim are from the "cold" flow of the planchets metal past the die surface causing wear. They simply come from using the die too long.

as my learning curve improves, and knowing the Die Deterioration, and Machine Doubling do not add value to the coins, I still find them to be "cool" finds, and the break up the span between finding the "real deal". not everything I keep, is based only on increased collector value. personally I enjoy finding them - also. I have so far found (7) seven definite variety cents. just my opinion.
