An image of the letters STA in STATES on the reverse of a Cent taken too close. The width looks the same from letter to letter. Try pulling away from the coin a little to see what it is overall all. When you get too close it is hard to see what is really going on with the devices.
It's hard to tell without examining the coin, but it could be the beginning of a die crack, it could be a planchet line that happens to line up with the sides of the letter, or it could be a split in the plating. It could also be Machine Doubling.
One thing it definitely is not would be a doubled die. The letter is of normal thickness. If it were hub doubled, this would defiitely not be the case.
