Why are there so many mint sets from the 70's that are toned? I have seen a lot of yellowish tones and patchy hazing. What causes this? Is it from being stored in the original mint set plastic?

I believe this happens when stored and heat and humidity are present. Wait and see what the pros say.

I have a theory that the "crimper" that makes the sections actually makes tiny holes which allows some air to get in. Maybe they were a little sharp and they since changed the parts on the machine that seals them. I personally found some pretty neat looking toned nickels from these sets, and am glad for the result of the packaging.

Since I've got sets from way, way back this post made me go look at the Uncir and Proof sets from the 70's. All looked just as they did the day I received them. Then started to look at the ones from the 50's and 60's ara and same thing, nothing. Might be the way some people store them and/or the situation. Possible handling has made some small almost trivial cracks or openings that allowed air to enter. Difficult to say. Mine all look like new.
