SEE Last post!

I have a Kodak easyshare dx6340.It has a macro option,3.2 megapixels.
No matter what I do the pictures are sub-par. Is it time for a new camera or is it an OPERATOR problem.

I don't know what to tell ya. I couldn't take a good pic until I picked up a Sony a-300 and a close-up lens set to go along with it.

murty, if you could post some examples in the test forum we could give specific advice. We need to see if the pix are out of focus, or perhaps over/underexposed, or even blurry from camera movement (do you use some kind of support?). What about the lighting? Could be that the screen doesn't match what the lens "sees" when the camera is in macro mode. Etc.

The key to getting good pics from any given camera is learning to work within the camera's limitations. Not knowing what technique you're using right now, I'll just run down a few things that should be standard:

1) Firm camera mounting, preventing any possibility of shake.
2) The plane of the lens and the coin should be exactly parallel.
3) Timed shutter release, eliminating the chance of moving the camera when you press the shutter.
4) Working within the camera's published macro limits (4"-24" for your camera) - don't try to get too close.
5) Fully manual operation, so you can tweak things and learn your camera's sweet spot.
6) Take a whole lot of pics. Change one thing every time, and record the settings.

Caught me about to head out for work - when I get back tonight I'll post a few ideas. Quick comment - whatever you did with the Morgan is your starting point for good shots of every coin. Work within the limits of your camera.

Yeah, the Morgan looks great, although the lighting appears to be from one source, like a 30-watt fluorescent bulb, which causes over-lighting in the center. 50¢ standing liberty appears to have some camera movement and is a bit dark. The lighting on the top pic, the quarter, is excellent, but the photo appears to be out of focus.

I would NOT call any of these pix "lousy", but I would say some tweaking would be in order to improve them to their best. Keep 'em coming!
