Since we have First Strike coins, how long will it be until we have Last Struck coins? First Strike was always off to me. I think we cherish the last of an item more than the first. The setting sun evokes more memories and emotion than the rising sun. The "grand finale," "last but not least" and I'm sure I can come up with a lot more sayings, etc. Maybe I could make a business from certifying "Last Struck" and people will pay through their noses for the privilege of the Last LMC, the Last 2009 ASE, etc. What do you think?

i have never understood the concept of a additional premium, for a "first strike" or early releases, designation. any coin in any given grade, (grade by a third party or not), has precisely the same value to me, whether it was the first one, tenth one or one millionth one. first strike designation is just a marketing gimmick.

The setting sun evokes more memories than the rising sun because many of us are too lazy to get up that early. There are "grand openings", too. And "last but not least" is something we say to people at the end of the line to make sure their feelings aren't hurt.

Of course I was being a bit whimsical... but I was thinking about this idea, and most people will probably think it is silly. That is, until someone wraps it up and markets it.

And if you play it in reverse the rising sun becomes the setting sun!

I agree that a LAST STRUCK coin should be the one people would want most. A first struck coin could be one of billions or even trillions. So who cares about the first one if there is going to be so many. AHHHH but if you find out there is only a few millions or even less of a coin minted, then the last one is really important. It is a last minted coin of a rare mintage and you now have the last one made. Sort of like getting the last Oldsmobile of the assembly line.

I suspect that this coin was close to the last struck. How many more impacts could the die take?

What about the last Morgan (1921) and the first Peace dollar (1921)? The Peace is the winner here.

G'day, I thought that the significance of "first strike" was that the dies were new and, all other things being equal, the resulting coin was best possible example. Whereas a later strike coin would begin life with Cuds, cracks, and poor details as regards design elements generally. Peter in Oz

What sort of label would a coin get when it was the only one minted of its date?
First & Last Struck?
