i think I just got me a VAM 123 pictures wasnt to clear but I could see the mark inside the R so I'm taking a chance on the coin, when I get it I will be able to look at it better. heres the pictures they are not to clear but you can see a mark inside the R at top and the 7th stare looks to have the mark also.

Kevin,

I sympathize because I've "been there, done that". I can't attribute this one with the small photos, but I can assure you it's not the elusive 123. First and foremost is the broken 'r' in "Trust" on the reverse (it's actually hollowed-out). The VAM 123 is complete and not broken. Secondly, the seventh left star does not have the required distinct doubling.

When the coin arrives, take some pictures and we'll properly attribute it. With the broken 'r' it will be in the 160~189 group.

I'm adding a post script on this one ... I hope you prove me wrong!

Kevin, compare your coin to the Vam-121.

Have a look at VAM-188:

http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-188

The nose is a clue; I see what looks like the characteristic washed-out "L," and the filled "e" in "We." If it is, that wouls make this coin very close to the finest-known example, currently an AU-53.

Kevin, just for the heck of it, can we have a picture of the L in liberty, Y in liberty, r in trust and UM in unum?

Kevin,

Sorry to hear it's not the big one. Could you post a decent pic of the entire obverse and reverse for us. For any attribution we really need to see the whole picture first. On 78's we're specifically looking for three things to narrow the field and all are on the reverse ... tail feathers, arrow feathers and the 'r' in trust. Sometimes we spin off in the wrong direction without first verifying these three markers. On this coin, I would really like to get a decent look at the 'r' in trust. Thanks.

Kevin,

You're a real trooper here. Fun isn't it?

I think you have a VAM 161 Shifted 'E'. The 'R' in PLURIBUS is a match and it appears there is tripling on the inner ear. Of course, VAMWorld doesn't list all the features on their webpage. Usually they only list enough to nail down an attribution. Keys for the 161 are the 'E' the 'R' the lack of significant doubling on the 'P' and of course that ear tripling. The coin also has the broken 'r' in 'Trust' on the reverse.

Check it against the 161 and let us know if we have a match.
