Went to the two post office's in my town and the stamp vending machines are all taped up to where they can't be used. I use them often to get stamps and to get the dollar coins it dispenses as change. Main reason for this - when I go to the banks in my area and ask for the dollar coins, they tell me they don't have any. So I've been getting them from the stamp machine. Since the machines are dead in my town, I decided to go to the Post Office in the town I work in. ---Got there and No Machine At All. Went in to purchase stamps and asked about the machine. The lady told me they were taking all of them out because they can't get the dollar coins for change and they break down a lot. Found this info. but not sure about the dollar coin shortage part?

I used to do the same thing, but all of the coin operated stamp machines around here were replaced with ones that took debit/credit cards.

I seriously doubt there is any such dollar coin shortage, the US Mint currently has Presidential dollars from 2007-2009 available through the Direct Ship program. For something that does not really circulate, you would think ~3 billion small dollars minted since 1979 would be a substantial supply. I have heard that the USPS has had some serious maintenance issues with the vending machines but that probably could have been avoided in the first place by not going with the lowest bidder

BTW, your WashPo link is dead

CoyoteMoss,

You might want to try your local coin operated car wash; I find a lot of them in my area dispense small dollar coins as change.

They bought some of those "authentic" stamp machines from China off fee-pay!

The car wash is the place to get them!

want to know where the coins are ? about half the production is being used as national currency in other countries .

Although not widespread in the United States, the Sacagawea dollar is very popular in Ecuador and other foreign countries that have made the US dollar their currency. Since dollarization, an estimated 500 million coins, approximately half of those minted, have been used in Ecuador, El Salvador, and other Latin American countries.[16]

Sounds like your in a small town somewhere. Usually small towns are surrounded by other small towns. You may want to keep on trying some of those other towns banks. Have you tried asking at the banks in your town to order you some of those coins? Sure wish you were here. Most banks around me are trying to get people to take those baby dollars and no one wants them.
