I tried to get pictures that would show the weird condition of the edge of this nickel. The areas that seem kind of gouged are actually raised up. It was while trying to take the pictures that I noticed how odd the date looks as well.

As always, I appreciate all opinions.

I think this is caused by a buildup of foreign metal particles or Die Deterioration. It is not an error as far as I know.

Its like a clear grease from minting. You can remove it with a green thorn and it will be gone. Toothpicks can scratch the surface of BU coins, thus the green thorn.

Forgive my ignorance but when you say green thorn do you mean like from a rose?
