Do you need every variety of a coin in a series to feel your collection is complete? Or is a single coin from each year and mint mark sufficient to consider your collection complete? For me I feel my LMC set is complete although I do not have the 1970-S small date.

No, but I have Dansco albums. If it has a hole, then I feel I have to fill it to be complete. The small dates do not bother me so much, but I often wish that the 1922-D "plain" hole was not in my Lincoln album.

If you keep your collection in your own album without pre-assigned slots, then you write the rules!

I don't have the 70 Small date either, but I'm not worried about "completeness" right now. I do have my eye out for one, though...

It would be impossible to do for the Lincoln series. It's esitmated that there are over 10,000 varieties and errors. However, I believe a Lincoln collection is only complete when you have the "majors". I consider the 70-S small date to be one of those important coins in the LMC series....along with the 72/72 and the 95/95.

This is always a personal question and your rules will change from set to set. When I first started collecting my Lincolns the first thing I wanted was just a date (not mint) from each year. From there I realized they were easier to obtain than I thought and made sure there was a P & D. At this point I focused on my wheat's and tried to get as many as possible and then took out my finer examples and started to put them in a Dansco folder. At first. the empty holes did not bother me, but as I started to upgrade my coins and filling in the S mints it started to eat at me. I know there are a few holes in the front of the book that will take a LONG time to fill, but that 70-S small date just makes me upset that I did not buy it when I found it for $30 about two years ago.

The same rule does not apply for my other sets, for some reason it does not bother me to not have the S mint or silver dimes, nickels or Kennedy halves, but it does for my Eisenhower set. I think it comes down to what set I really enjoy the most and for what reason.

With as much as there is available, it is pretty much impossible to be a completest.
I'm with the rest, if there is an open hole in the album, I will look to fill it in.
I personally like to trip over deal out there. I might not ever spend the big bucks to acquire a piece(if I can help it)

I collect by variety so for me its important. It has the big disadvantage of making a complete collection next to impossible. It does however lead you to amass a fairly large collection and it tends to teach you way more than just collecting the regular date/mm series..

To each his own.
There is no "really" complete collection. If you look at the LMC, you find there are about three that will be VERY hard to get. One definitely, the 1909-S VDB My set has all but that one. I say my set, better said my most complete set. I have several others, in various stages of completeness. It is a non-ending goal. As one fills, the next comes to the fore. If one collects varieties, then you have your work cut out for you! Check coppercoins.com. If you are a member, you know what I mean. If not, join, and you will see that is there! The IHC collections are not as extensive as the LMC, but they will set you back a whole lot more! Seems like, as we fill a hole here, and there, there always is a few more that need to be filled. In my case, as the LMC become "scarce", my Canadian cents collection seems to have new coins that have to be added, (and that applies to any coin collection, if it is modern. I hope to collect all the cions I need for my sets, but at the ssame time, I know it will never happen. (I plan on living a long time, but not forever) just like a world traveler, there is always one more bridge to cross. happy hunting to all!
