I'm trying to upgrade problem coins in my Dansco 7070. Here is my latest upgrade purchased in an ANACS problem free slab. I love the look of this coin, from the light golden toning, the hammered strike, and the dripping luster. Opinions?

Very Nice! AU-58 or MS-60?

I wish my camera could take crisp, clear shots like yours. It looks a bit more scratched than an AU, so I'm going with EF-45.

Thanks for the comments. These are the sellers pictures. ANACS graded this one AU-58, and from what I can see, I think it is solid for the grade. The devices are very sharp, and I really don't see any wear at all on them, except maybe a light wisp. There is luster in places that an AU-50 or 53 wouldnt have; like out in the open beyond the protected areas and on the devices. There are some circulation hairlines in the field, which probably account for the grade dropping below MS. Nothing problematic IMO.

I was scouring the heritage archives for AU coins of this date, and I couldn't find a single one that I would prefer over this coin. As a matter of fact, 80%-90% or so of them were in "cleaned" slabs. Check it out: http://coins.ha.com/common/search_r...0+231+373+67

There were few mint state examples which leads me to believe this is a tough coin in higher grades. This coin went for $227.00.

edit: I was looking at PCGS coinfacts, and the total population estimate is only 1,500 for this date, with only 100 at MS-60 or above.

Congrats Johnny, it's a beauty! With the slight rub on Liberty's breast and right thigh and luster breaks in the fields, I think ANACS called it right at AU-58. A couple stars and the eagle's right talons are not fully struck which is common for Seated halves. The hairline scratches are short, shallow, and randomly oriented which indicates they are from circulation and not from a cleaning attempt.

Way to fill that no-motto slot in your type set!

Awesome coin!!

I think, logically, it would grade AU-58.

Emotionally, (because it's so sharp and clean and I love it!) I would say MS-60.

VERY nice!
