I have been searching a bunch of SBA's that I have had for some time; two of which look really odd. Both look to be clearly double struck, both on the obverse and reverse. On one there is clearly two P mint marks, and double chin and nose. There seem to be other problems with the coins also. Anyone got any ideas about these-double strike or something else?

I would love to say that you have two awesome double struck errors but I find myself questioning the authenticity of the coins, they just don't look right at all.

Could the first one be double-struck in collar? Doubt it's a Doubled Die. Chinese Counterfeit?

jprine, I'm sorry to say that I really think those are fakes. I've heard of SBAs and Sacs being counterfeited in Ecuador and other Latin American countries where U.S. dollar coins are used much more widely than they are here. The color just doesn't look right at all.

i have found a counterfit SBA before myself, do a drop test along with a "normal" SBA. If you hear a signifigant difference you may have a counterfit. Also check the edge for cast marks as well as solid colour reeding. A real SBA will have a blend of copper and nickel on the edge.

OK. I weighed the coins today. One weighed 9.54 grams and one weighed 9.56 grams. If I read the coin facts correctly, the SBA should weigh 8.1 grams. Does this confirm conterfeit? If so, does that make them anything besides interesting to have? Thanks

Yes, way too heavy to be real.

Thanks for the help. To date, it is still my most interesting find. Maybe next time, I will find something worth some $.

I got my scale on ebay for under $30. I use it mostly for weighing gunpowder for reloading, but it has a gram function also. Very handy to have.
