I picked up another 1921-D VAM 1G on ebay (see my earlier post in this section to view the first one). This one grades about AU-55, with excellent luster and light wear on the eagle's breast and legs. The "sunken" obverse denticles at 12:00 to 1:00 and the definitive die crack over STATES are very pronounced. Maybe this one is approaching the desirable late die state (LDS) condition.

My cost was about $18. It seems that most VAMs are distinguished by tiny details that you need a microscope to confirm. However, when the VAM features are "naked eye visible" (like on this 1G) the coins become much more interesting IMO. If I can find such coins for the same price as the normal die types, maybe I'll become a VAM fan!

Me like.

The very latest die states of this one have the break above the "S" completely filled in - those are spectacular. I very much agree that the naked-eye VAM's are more interesting; it's one of the reasons why I'm so enamored of 1921's. There are some really wild breakages among them.
