Well, I'm glad our forum members know a proof Mercury when they see it! This coin is actually graded PR-67 Deep Cameo by PCI. I'm pretty sure they overgraded it by probably 2 points and although it does have cameo contrast (unusual for a Mercury dime) it does not make a DCAM grade. I had submitted it for crossover to PCGS specifying a minimum acceptable grade of PR-65 Cameo and they did not cross it. Either the 65 numerical grade was still too high for their standards or it wasn't cameo enough in their judgment. Oh well, I'll just keep in in the PCI plastic. It does have a lot of "pop" for a Mercury dime proof.

Thanks for the replies!

Very nice coin! The reverse looks cameo to me, but not the obverse. I think PCGS requires both obv and rev to be cameo in order to designate it as such. My understanding is that merc proofs are very rare in cameo, so they are probably quite strict with that designation.

As far as the grade goes, these are extremely difficult to grade based on photos, because a lot of the tiny hairlines that hold these coins back in a PR grade are difficult to detect without the coin in hand.
